Frequently asked questions

What does Faster do?

Faster turns a video into a timelapse or a stop-motion clip. You set a speed multiplier and a style, and it writes a new file. Your original is never modified.

Which Macs does it run on?

Faster requires macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later.

How do I open a video?

Drag a video file onto the Faster window, or press Choose Video. The small window then grows into the editor around your clip.

What is the difference between the three styles?

Speed decides how much time is removed. Style decides how many frames survive. Smooth caps the output at 30 fps and reads fluid, timelapse runs at 15 fps by default, and stop-motion runs at 8. Lower fps means a stronger frame by frame feel.

Can I change the frame rates?

Yes. In Settings, timelapse can be set to 12, 15, 18 or 24 fps, and stop-motion to 6, 8, 10 or 12 fps. New windows pick up the new defaults.

Why does the preview look softer than the export?

The preview plays from a light copy so it stays smooth at high speeds. The export always uses the original file at the quality you chose.

Can I clear the preview cache?

Yes. Settings shows the cache size and a Clear Cache button. Fast previews are rebuilt the next time you open those videos.

What happens to the audio?

Up to 4x the audio is kept and time scaled with the pitch preserved, so voices sound faster but not higher. Above 4x it is muted. You can also mute it yourself.

Which export options are available?

HEVC for the sharpest result, H.264 for maximum compatibility, or source quality, which follows the data rate of the original. You can also cap the output height. Faster never upscales.

Can I trim the video?

Yes. Enter trim mode, select the range with the yellow handles and confirm. The trim can be removed again at any time.

Why is a speed I want unavailable?

Faster will not produce an output shorter than three seconds. If the multiplier would take the clip below that, it steps down to the highest speed the clip can carry.

Which languages does Faster speak?

English, Turkish, German, French, Japanese, Korean and Simplified Chinese.

Can I export an animated GIF?

Yes. Switch Format to GIF and export as usual. A GIF loops, carries no audio, and holds 256 colours per frame, so Faster caps the frame rate at 20 fps and scales the picture down until the whole loop stays small enough to send. If a job would still be unusably large it is refused with the frame count, rather than quietly ruined.

Does Faster send my video anywhere?

No. The app is sandboxed and works only on the files you pick in a dialog. There is no account, no analytics and no tracking. It makes one network request in its whole life, and only if you open Settings and then Other Apps, to fetch a list of the publisher's other apps.
